There is a solution called 2X (
www.2x.com) we have been testing in our LAN and it appears to do what we want. I'll post any progress that could help someone else with a similar issue. In the meantime, feel free to comment!

Remote desktop is a cinch as a RD client is part of every PC and Macintosh today. A click on an icon.
