Hello Russell

I assume all of your tables are contained in a VFP database. If this is the case, did you copy File5 from file4 or have file4 and file5 been derived from each other in any way? What VFP allows is that the table name used by the database need not be the same as the table name used by the OS so the file name may well be file4 or file5 but in the DBC the names may be the same so when you USE File4 it opens the same physical file as the USE File5 command whereby you get a file is in use error.

try this

USE File4
? DBF()
USE
USE File5
? DBF()

and see if they return the same file name. It may not be the solution but its worth a shot

Good luck

Goran
