KEN MURPHY: YOU SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH - AND THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE. (JOHN 8:33)
Ken Murphy Memorial Page

On Sunday, April 27, 2008, our mentor and inspirer and good friend Ken Murphy passed away at the age of 51. He died of a heart attack after he had done the music for the Sunday Mass. On May 19, 2008, Ken would have been 52. We are deeply saddened by the loss of this wonderful person. Ken helped so many of our members without expecting anything in return. Ken was always here, day and night, waiting for problems to be solved and questions to be answered. In the 3 years, since March 28, 2005, that he was a Member, he posted over 10,000 messages. In 2007 and 2008, Ken received the Microsoft MVP award for his contributions to this and other online and offline communities.
We will miss Ken dearly and will always honor him on this memorial page. On the forum, we can already hear the sound of his silence.

Please read the announcement and responses in our Forum. You can download his obituary here. You can also download Ken's intersession and Ken's Eulogy.

On May 19, 2008, Ken's 52nd birthday, we received this Message to the Foxite Community from Gail Murphy.

Below you can read some personal comments from our members. If you like to share your own personal story about your experiences with Ken, please send it by e-mail (eric@foxite.com) and we will take care of it.

Ken was a great guy to work with. He was honest and fair, noble and very knowledgeable. I enjoyed his postings on our Forum and our chats on MSN. Since Ken almost "lived" in our Forum 24x7, he accepted my request to work as a voluntary Forum Moderator. I remember he was very proud of being asked. But in fact, I was very proud to have Ken a member of the "staff".

On MSN, I talked with Ken about his wife Gail, about his country and his ministry work. He often invited me to come over to his place to enjoy the nature (canoe, fishing, hunting) and the food. He was always interested in my little son Thiemo.

Ken will be missed. I consider him a friend gone too early. I feel sad that we never met.

There are nice people and there are people who are so good in their intrinsic nature that no word can exactly describe what they are. I use to refer to those people as Masters. Ken was such a Master.

Not only in the way he was always ready to abundantly share his knowledge but even more so in the way he treated people.

Each person was treated by Ken as a King or Queen, with dignity, respect and also always that encouragement to grow and find your own strength. I was blessed to speak with Ken (over MSN) and I can say that the way he spoke (his choice of words) was completely in line with what he wrote.

Knowing that Ken was a religious man I can only say that he truly was practicing what he preached. A role model in more than one aspect of life.

He will be missed, but he will live on in our hearts.

Ken and I go back to when Ken first came to Foxite in the spring of 2005. Him and I just seemed to click and very quickly I added him into my MSN and he added me into his messanger. Many an evening I would log into Foxite and sure enough Ken was logged in as well. Then we would chat and review threads of interest.

We had a lot in common, we both were very active in the church, we both were programmers and both very entrenched in Visual FoxPro.

It became very evident to me that Ken was a very special kind of person. I quickly came to admire him deeply for not only the kind person he was, but his dedication to anything he put him mind to. He became very quickly an "elite member" of Foxite and well respected for his knowledge. I was so happy for him when he got nominated for MVP and simply by the work and effort he demonstated daily, he deserved this honour 10 times over.

I know Ken and I will meet up again when my time runs.

Ken has always been the bridge who, in my humble observation, influenced newbies to have the strength to ask questions and the experts to answer those in needs; without prejudice. He has set the example and has always been the role model for everyone here.

With Ken, you can always feel comfortable. You can be serious or joke around and he will always try to understand you. Ken, being a natural considerate person, always care and think of others. I would like to share here the words that he gave me when he volunteered to be my editor for my article:

"Yes. Begin with the idea that the reader may be a novice developer and write the article expressly for that novice. More advanced developers will not have any problem with that writing style, but the novice will gain a lot. When writing an article for the novice, you normally have to expand a bit on your explanations of what you are doing and why."
- and -
"Jun, When you submit this to Eric, you can reduce his work by including the VFP code tags <vfp> and </vfp> (same as on the forum.) When he posts an article, he typically has to go through the thing and add the code tags. I am sure he would take it as a kindness if you added them for him."

It summarizes the passion Ken has of helping and caring for others.

Ken was a great man. I learned a lot from him. He was very knowledgeable and honest person. Without knowing Visual FoxPro I completed my project with help of Ken. In every posing, he explained line by line. I missed a good teacher. I know him since August 2007. unforgettable person. He is the first VFP guru for me. I will never forgot him. Physically he is no more... but he live in our hearts.

I feel a deep sense of loss and shock at Ken's passing and wish to extend condolences to his family and friends.

I've always been amazed at the depth of his programming knowledge and often wondered where he found the time to both acquire such knowledge and to respond so promptly to our questions. I will certainly miss him.

On the brighter side I think St. Peter needed a good Vfp programmer and unfortunately for us Ken was choosen. My his soul rest in peace.

Since I’ve joined the forum last February of this year, He is one of the Experts that gave practical solutions to all of my queries.

He is one of those experts that unselfishly and generously answer all the questions in the forum without expecting anything in return. In fact, on that same day before he past away, He gave me a practical advice in one of my threads.

I am still shocked with Ken’s death. But then again, I salute you KEN!!! And I am dedicating my program for you. You will be remembered forever…

THANK YOU SO MUCH

Sometimes I thought "Ken doesn´t sleep? He is always helping and answering questions". He doesn´t leave someone without a reply. Always a right reply. He helped me several times and in crucial moments. I knew him since Sepmber 2005. I know a phrase that say:

"Who doesn´t live to serve doesn´t serve for nothing."

He lived to serve. Your Family. Your Church. FoxPro Community.

Thank you very much for all.

Ken has been a pillar of strength and a guiding light in www.foxite.com not only in terms of offering solutions for VFP but in personal and oftentimes sensitive issues as well. He had offered prayers for my Mom when she had her second heart attack as few years back. Ken will surely be missed, though I feel sad that he is gone, I also am sure that he is in place void of all problems and pain. We have never met in person but I consider him a friend. Thanks for everything. Goodbye my friend and may you rest in peace.

I think this is the first time Foxite has lost one of its best men since this forum was built. His leaving forever is really a hole in my heart and everyone's heart who loves him no matter one has met him before in person. His sincerity and generousity have crafted in everyone's heart who knows him here both in virtual and real world.

But if I reopen and reread my posts where he answered in them, it feels as if he were still alive safe and sound, giving me suggestions, solutions and arguments. Still lingers in my head what he wrote in my threads especially about cursor. Somewhat I still can't believe he's gone. We miss him indeed.

You may die but not to what you did here in this forum for all members.

Helpful, Fair and Forthright. This is how I know Ken, even though I knew him though the internet, and kind-of recently. Even though on foxite, the language was always technical, somehow, the speed of his response, and his patience and endearance to solve my problem, always brought out a great sense of great warmth.I could practically consider myself a novice before his great pool of knowledge, but he was most forthcoming and generous in his solutions and advice, and has helped me numerous times.

We will miss you, Ken, the way we need to miss some of the most special persons on our earth. People who leave a great void when they are not around.

May his soul rest in peace.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Ken’s passing. It has been a number of years since I’ve seen him, but I do recall his patience and kindness as he tutored this young man in math almost 20 years ago. I think he would be pleased to know that his pupil went from struggling in math, to graduating high school, and eventually taking (and passing) college level calculus courses thanks to his time and patience all those years ago. He would kindly urge me ahead, keep me on task learning, but allowed time to indulge me every so often when I wanted to talk about cars ( I remember being fascinated about his stories of a jaguar he used to have) or music (He lent me my first Rush album, and I am still a fan to this day). I always enjoyed those tutorials, and it so impressed me as a 14 year old what a knowledgeable guy he was about so many things, and now looking back, I wish I’d had the opportunity to know him as an adult. Thanks for everything Ken; you’ve left an indelible mark upon the world, and so many of us are better for having known you.

I am really saddened by the demise of Ken Murphy. Although I am not active in participating in Foxite, I have learned a lot reading his posts. in some cases he answered my posts.

It's very sad that somebody who is of great help to a worldwide community passes away. My prayers to him and also to you guys who have been helping us a lot by sharing your knowledge.

God Bless You!
