Just like Pete I too was asked by Eric to keep an eye on this forum. It is a tough job to even try to do it as good as Ken ever did. Maybe some day I can stand in his shade. Till that day you have to deal with the bend humor from this double-dutch guy who loves this forum. I'll give my best.

Foxite Site Monitor

Afternoon from the Great White North of Canada, I have been in discussions with Eric and he has asked me to be a site monitor for our site.
It is with a saddened heart that I assume this position and under very sad circumstances personally for me indeed. I find myself coming into this role somewhat unprepared and knowing full well I can never ever fill the shoes of Ken or even come close to the level of excellence that he has shown. However, with Ken really being a main influence in me coming back to Foxite, I really think that he would have wished me to take on this role... this I truly believe in my heart. So Foxite folks, this I do in Ken's houour and what he would have wished of me for him. I have very little else to say at this time, just I will do my very best to live up to Ken's dedication.

And as I always said to Ken, "See ya in the forum!"

Ken Murphy has passed away

I am deeply saddened by the news that our good friend Ken Murphy has passed away of a heart attack on Sunday, April 27, after he had done the music for the Sunday Mass. Ken was a good friend who helped me and many other members many times. I will always remember his enthusiasm for his work here at Foxite and his church and his country. He will be missed. I wish his wife Gail and his children, his family and other friends all the best and they are in my thoughts and prayers. Ken, may you rest in peace. You shall know the truth - and the truth shall set you free. (John 8:33).

Smileys and emoticons on the forum

I have added two new account options and a new toolbar button. The new toolbar button is available on the New Post, Reply, and Edit Post pages. If you click the button, a list of all currently supported smileys and emoticons is displayed. Click the Insert link to add the smiley tag into your message. It should insert at the current cursor position. On your account options page, you should see a new checkbox called "Display Emoticons instead of text smileys". If checked, any supported text smiley is replaced with it's emoticon image. This feature is turned OFF by default. For those of you who don't like emoticons at all, I have added the "Remove Emoticons toolbar button" checkbox. Please note that this stuff is new and I did not have time to fully test it. I am using a very complicated regular expression for identifying text smiley's in a message body. This regex needs some more fine tuning. Enjoy, or not ;-)

Here's a new article by Josip Zohil: VFP performance in LAN environment. Excerpt: Visual FoxPro is one the fastest performing desktop and LAN-based database management system available today. But opening large tables creates a great deal of network traffic. This can be a substantial delay, sometimes beyond an acceptable length of time. In this article I present the results of the VFP speed measurement in the process of acquiring database data with different VFP9 methods. The store procedures, duplicated records and unique indexes enriched by the programmers? knowledge of the database organization can speed up the data query. With the stored procedure we can fetches the result set of 100 records from the server about 100% faster than with the full optimized SQL command. Changing the table?s normalization and using appropriate indexes, we can improve the retrieval time for 275%.

I?d like to thank you all for your enthusiasm and contributions to the Foxite Community. I?d also like to thank the Sponsors who have donated in the past year. Despite Microsoft's announcement to terminate VFP, 2007 was the busiest year on Foxite ever. Over 37,000 messages were posted (31000 in 2006). Where are our Members?

I've added a new image button next to the country flag in the Message Header area. If you click this button, a new browser window is opened and will display a Google map of the Member's city. If you do not see the Map image button, you have to go into your account options and select your country from the Country drop down list. Residents of the USA can also select their State from the US State drop down list. If you haven't done so yet, please also enter your City name. If Google fails to display the map, then most likely you have to change your City name. For example, Google does not understand "Carlsbad (San Diego county)". In this case, the City name needs to be changed to "Carlsbad". Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Downtime & connection problems

Construction workers have accidently broken a huge underground communication cable in my residential area. While the telco is working hard to fix the broken cable, you may experience connection problems. They are not sure when they're done.
