I had a situation recently where a client sent me a file with an XLS extension to be imported, but it turned out the file was actually a CSV file. Excel will display a CSV file just like it was an XLS file, so you can tell by how it looks in Excel.

Barbara,

Did we have XL8 in VFP6?

Good idea on the CSV file - I got one of those a while back too. Extension = XLS but it was actually a CSV.

Sandeep,

It could also be that your user is using the latest version of Excel but your VFP 6 doesn't recognize it. Have your user send you the CSV or have your user SAVE AS an earlier version of Excel. Might be another reason to upgrade your VFP.
