Nothing wrong with that, it's most certainly better than nothing.
You could somewhat automate this with the projecthook, take a look at QueryModifyFile, this method runs just before the actual codewindow opens.
Use the ofile.name to retrieve the name of the file you are editing.

when you create a class, based on the projecthook fill the QueryModifyFile method.
From there you can copy the oFile.name to another folder of your choice.

Once done open you project, from the project menu select project info.
In the project tab, check the project class, use the search button (with the three ellipsis) to add you projecthook to the project.
You need to close and reopen the project before the hook kicks in.

If you want to open the project without the hook kicking in open the project from the command window with the NOPROJECTHOOK clause as in:
Modify project blabla NOPROJECTHOOK

If you want this for all your projects go to tools->options.
Select the project tab. the steps are basically the same.
Any NEW project has this projecthook automatically, for existing projects you have to add the hook manually.

As to the question of backups, there are three types of developers:
those that once lost data and now use backups
those that will lose data some moment in time and start using backups then.
those who are scared of losing data and used backups to start with.

To what group do you belong (LOL)
