I know that the scanners that I use can be programmed to send certain codes depending upon the barcode.
eg. If the type of barcode scanned is 3of9 and the length of the barcode is 10 characters I might get the scanner to send "ALT+P" and then the barcode.
Check that out for your scanner.
Otherwise the scanner is just sending keystrokes as from a keyboard.
