Hey Jun,

I think the guy wrote a good letter. And we do need to be reminded
about the tough work of so many Filipino ex-pats around the world.

It's hard to stereotype a country's people. After the Fukushima
tsunami in 2011, I wrote a blog on my website
trying to explain character of the Japanese. They are also very
hard working too, but obviously coming from a more industrialized country,
so the tempo of life is faster in some respects.

If Pete and you are Filipino, then one trait I can think of is a certain
playfulness about life and work. Yeah, you work hard, but don't take it all too
seriously.

When I was on working at the Navy base in Japan, the leading chief petty
officer on the base was a Filipino. Great guy. He was joking all the
time, but he got things done. He was a people person and a great manager
too without acting like one.

Getting back to the guy who wrote the letter, I'm not sure he's been back in
the States for a while. The recession hit us hard. A lot of people have been cutting
back and learning to eat humble pie the last 5 years. I have one brother who's
an engineer and out of work. Another couldn't find work, but is now enjoying his
life as a teacher of English in Vietnam. Then a third brother of mine was out of
work for two years and finally got a full-time job last month.

But even still, people in the States are still living in comfort. Many are working
hard to make ends meet, but nobody goes hungry and the hospitals will take you
if you're sick and don't have the money to pay for it.

In recent years our leaders have put us on a path to be more like the European economic
model. But people joke about that, saying, what's the point of following
Europe if we can't get those cute cafes and bistros in the suburbs?

Take care, Jun.

Dan B.
