Found it! In the textbox class I use on grids I had added a DODEFAULT() to the Click method. The parent class' Click method has this:

if this.parent.class = 'Column'
   This.SelStart = 0
   This.SelLength = 999
   NODEFAULT
endif

Why this causes a problem I'm not sure,

This causes a problem because of the NODEFAULT < s>. It prevents the click from firing. If the click does not fire, neither can the dblClick() < s >. I know because I use code like this to ensure that the entire textbox in the grid is selected even when the user clicks into it with the mouse - but I only use it when I am certain that I will not need dblClick() functionality.
