Any string literal is limited to 255 characters, but the contents of a variable can be up to 8k.
(See "Visual FoxPro System Capacities" in the Help file for all the details)

Not specifically but since the list is limited to 24 items anyway, it is not too hard to keep it within the boundary.

You could use a function like OCCURS() to count the number of commas, or GETWORDCOUNT() to determine how many items are in the list....
