You can try to have in your grid column both the dafult "text" control, and you "container" control. Then you can use DynamicCurrentControl, like this:

thisform.grid1.column1.DynamicCurrentControl="iif(!EMPTY(yourtable.yourtext),'container','text')"

And for point 2, you can try to set "Sparse" to .T. for that column.

I haven't try all these, but I guess it should work,
