David,

I take it from your request that you want to run an existing application.

You have two options; run the application under wine or within a virtual machine.

Check out Paul McNett's tutorial - http://paulmcnett.com/vfp/wine/vfp-wine-whitepaper.pdf

Wine work well in most cases but I have found personally the screen does not render very well and not all things work as expected.

WinHQ indicates VFP7 has a gold rating and VFP9 has a bronze rating http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=296

The definitions for rating are here... http://appdb.winehq.org/help/?sTopic=maintainer_ratings

Considering the eventual need to recompile or maintain code I think the use of a virtal machine is the best option.

When you migrate to Linux, use your existing XP/Vista/Windows7 license and install it on a VM. Although apps are around that can bundle your existing OS into a virtual machine I found they did not work as well as a fresh install. Personally I use VirtualBox https://www.virtualbox.org/ and my Windows XP + VFP9 works as fast as when I ran it on a native install. All my data is on ext4 on a Linux box and shared using SAMBA, e.g. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/install-samba-server-on-ubuntu/. The windows machine links in and uses the data without any problems. I have a dual screens and have various packages open in Ubuntu on one screen and VFP open in VirtualBox on the other screen. As I manipulate the data, run applications, etc in VFP the information is being grabbed and manipulated in various Linux applications (e.g. GIS packages, Python, LibreOffice).

I hopes this helps.
