Although apps are around that can bundle your existing OS into a virtual machine I found they did not work as well as a fresh install. Personally I use VirtualBox https://www.virtualbox.org/ and my Windows XP + VFP9 works as fast as when I ran it on a native install. All my data is on ext4 on a Linux box and shared using SAMBA, e.g. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/install-samba-server-on-ubuntu/. The windows machine links in and uses the data without any problems. I have a dual screens and have various packages open in Ubuntu on one screen and VFP open in VirtualBox on the other screen. As I manipulate the data, run applications, etc in VFP the information is being grabbed and manipulated in various Linux applications (e.g. GIS packages, Python, LibreOffice).

Virtual Machines are just like physical machines. If you configure it properly they have an IP address. If you use Hamachi now to access your box from the outside your LAN presumably you could do the same thing to your VirtualMachine -- just point it to the IP for the VM. I am sure you could find specific help and tutorials on the forums for the VM you would use.

Of course there are many other alternatives to Hamachi, if it does not talk to a Virtual Machine. All you can do is test the setup to see if it can be done.
