you could create a locking table, containing keyfield, username, datetime

when you want to edit the main record,
first check the locking table for the keyfield that you are editing,

if does not exist
write a record to the locking table
edit and save your main record away
remove the locking record so that others can edit.

if the lock did exist
show the user a message showing which user has it open for editing
