Python has a very smooth learning curve.
It has very simple syntax.
It has all the features of typical object oriented programming language.
You can have a look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Python_(programming_language)

I found the book "Learning Python" by Mark Lutz (O'Reilly) very good for learning python.

Furthermore, there are a lot of online tutorials to get a feel of python.
Just google it & you will get a plenty of such tuts.

For web based apps, I found web2py very powerful, productive & easy to write and deploy.
http://web2py.com/
(Before choosing web2py, I tried turbogears & django. But the learning curve is quite steep, and these are somewhat complicated.

Hope this helps.
