In my end (I have SP2), only the trailing space cause the error. Addbs remove the spaces (performs an Alltrim)

While
MD "c:\one\two\three\ sample \with. space"
failed,

MD "c:\one\two\three\ sample\with. space"
gives no error.

The same behaviour observed in the command prompt.

Windows Explorer also performs an Alltrim.

I suspect this happens because space is the separator for switches in a command line

Update
MD "c:\ ss "

creates the folder "c:\ ss" (automatically performs and RTRIM)

My respects
