I now have some customers who have installed Office 2010 (Click-to-Run) and office automation now no longer works. Any ideas as to why this may be the case. It appears as if word.basic does not get instantiated

Word.basic is a very old way to automate Word. It's been deprecated since Word 1998, I think. So I wouldn't be surprised if they've finally removed it.

The right way to automate Word is using the Word.Application object.
