Are you talking about shared tables? It could be done (overwritten) while others are still using it. I have tried that here many times. Once is because I decided to add an Integer AutoInc field on an existing table and I don't have the patience to wait for everyone to finish and log-off. Know what I did? I copied that table from server to my local unit (record contents is fixed, it is the secret table for my user access), opened it exclusively, issued MODI STRU, added the Int AutoInc field, closed the table; and overwritten the existing one in the server which is currently being used by my app which is open in several units.

The table is modified and overwritten without anybody knowing it. No problem on our side because I am the sole developer of that one.

That ability is also the reason why my smartbackup (http://weblogs.foxite.com/sandstorm36/archive/2008/05/30/Smart_Backup.aspx) was born in the first place although the process is reversed (the files are copied from server to local unit while being used).

P.S.

You cannot do that on tables opened EXCLUSIVELY. ;-)
