Just for info, actually for some time I have come to realize that we could really rename a .jpg file to bear a .bmp or .gif extension and it is still viewable with any imaage/picture manager. I guess well-made image/picture applications 'somehow' look at the file header too, not just its extension to determine the correct format type. But of course it is not recommendable to carelessly interchange extensions since physically the files are really different, eg. their sizes for one.
