My goal in this was same as yours - to find a solution to having images as separate files on disk. From Craig Berntson's article I thought this was the solution, but it obviously is not.

See, one of the basic things about a class is that it should not depend on any external stuff. So if my class has images, I need to supply them as external sources. I just was looking at some way where I could create a class with images that were somehow embedded in the class itself, and that the class knew how to access these images at runtime.
