The purpose of a primary key is for the program to have an internal identifier for records that can also be used for relating records. It shouldn't be anything with any meaning to a user at all, and in fact, the user should never even see the primary key.

Nicely explained. I've been troubled by suggestions that a GUID is not appropriate because it is somehow not just unique within a table. That is irrelevant as long as any particular key occurs only once within a particular table.
