In the VALID event you issue RETURN to exit the event. Here are what RETURN values do what...

RETURN .T. will allow processing to continue naturally.
RETURN .F. will stop event processing and keep the cursor within the current control. I think this method also initiates an error tone.
RETURN 0 will stop event processing and keep the cursor within the current control. No error tone is created.
RETURN n will advance the cursor n number of controls forward.
RETURN -n will regress the cursor n number of controls backward.
