Anders,
Any time you are creating a client/server app, you need to think about how much data you are going to send across a slow internet connection. VFP gives you the ability to load the entire table and in most cases, it does this fairly quickly (over a LAN.) When you get into client/server design, you need to start thinking in terms of record sets. You only want to download the data that you need to deal with right now. The remaining records can stay on the server and you don't have to download them. It is a bit of a mind shift, but quite simple to accomplish.

I recommend that you look at the concept of using SQL pass through techniques. You will already be familiar with the SQL SELECT statement and have probably used INSERT and UPDATE. SQL pass through techniques build on that knowledge. Look at SQLPREPARE, SQLEXEC, SQLCONNECT.
