OTHER >>  A QUICK AND SIMPLE "SHUTDOWN" BUTTON

There is no real need to push the "start" button on the taskbar to select "Turn off..." and then, once more push the "turn off ..." button.

On the desktop create a new shortcut.
Right click the desktop, from the context menu select new->shortcut.
Then, in the "Type location" textbox place the following line:
%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 0

-s stands for, shut down the local computer
-f stands for Force running applications to close
-t sets the timer for system shutdown in seconds, MIND YOU the default is 20 seconds!
By setting it to 0 (zero) your system will shutdown a wee bit faster.

For other options for shutdown.exe look in the windows helpfile, as usual RTFM helps you to get insight in stuff (sounds familiar hey).
take a look at "Command-line reference A-Z", mining for gold in the system.

Since shutdown.exe has no icons you need to select another icon.
So, right click the shortcut, select properties. On the "shortcut" tab select the "Change Icon" button.
First you get a messagebox saying:
"The file %windir%\system32\shutdown.exe contains no icons, choose an icon from the list or specify a different file"

After clicking OK you will get the icons from the shell32.dll. In that file is also the well known CLOSE button (the red square with circle and line)
Select that one or any other icon you can come up with.
Now, after completing this operation you can drag the shortcut to your "quick launch" bar and delete the icon on your desktop.

Your quicklaunch bar might look like this:

You see the stop button in the red circle.

when you want to shut down your machine click this shortcut. It will bring your machine down in no-time.

Hi Boudewijn,

We are in a Network and the shutdown of a LapTop is normally slow, your short cut is very good, cmputer goes down in seconds
